Run4Fun 2008

The Sheffield Run4Fun event took place on Wednesday 6th August 2008, in Hillsborough Sports Arena. The free run was set up to encourage participation in sport, and raise awareness of healthy living. The event was kept completely free to encourage friends and families to take part and have fun.

After a warm up with former Commonwealth running champion Diane Modahl, the race began. The event was open to all ages and abilities and saw participants walk, jog or run the 800m course around the park.

The event was a massive success with over 200 runners taking part and all participants received a certificate of achievement and special medal from Diane at the end of the race.

Along with the run, there were various stalls set up to promote healthy eating and regular activity, and free bottles of water were available for the run. The event was part of the annual Playday event in Hillsborough Park, which is a celebration of children’s right to play. Alongside the Run4Fun there was a mini fairground, a climbing wall and other adventurous activities that tied in with the theme ‘Give us a go!’ The campaign aims to remove the ‘cotton wool’ culture that can limit children’s play, and calls for children to be allowed adventurous and challenging play activities.

The free community event was sponsored by Community 1st Sheffield, organised by StreetGames with support from Activity Sheffield and delivered by Sport4Life. The event was the launch of the ‘healthy living’ activities sponsored by Community 1st Sheffield.
